Fundamental Analysis

The TenderAlpha team is excited to announce the launch of our Institutional Ownership & Company Fundamentals Data Feed! Designed to meet the sophisticated needs of today’s investors, the monthly-updated global equity ownership data is available on investment-manager level, rather than simply on parent fund level, thus allowing for a more granular view of the data.

It offers intelligence on the minority holdings of institutions, mutual fund portfolios, and non-institutional insider/stakeholders in ticker-mapped publicly-listed companies with market capitalization of at least $100 million.

Coupled with it, the quarterly-updated company fundamentals part seamlessly integrates 300+ data points retrieved from income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements, and ratio analysis.

Below you can familiarize yourself with the features and applications of the data and how we source the raw data, before we proceed to suggesting possible use cases.

Finally, we will be discussing the value of combining traditional data source like institutional ownership with alternative datasets from the TenderAlpha catalog, including government contracts data, transactional supply chain data, and import-export trade flows data.

Raw Data Sources

To build the Institutional Ownership & Company Fundamentals data feed, TenderAlpha collects data from a range of sources, both structured and unstructured.

The main sources of structured data include 13-F and N-Port SEC forms submitted every quarter by public companies in the US, as well as the UK Share Register and the Regulatory News Service (RNS) for tickers in the UK.

In addition, TenderAlpha collects unstructured data from companies’ annual reports, daily announcements, and transactional announcements, especially for companies from Europe and Asia.

Use Cases and Examples:

  • Investment Signal Detection: Discover ownership trends from institutional holdings data, including the frequency by which assets within a fund are bought and sold, and gain insights into stocks’ financial performance, market position, and growth potential;

Example: If institutional ownership in a tech company suddenly increases significantly over a quarter, this could indicate strong confidence in the company’s upcoming product launch or financial results. Investors might use this data as a signal to buy the stock before it experiences a potential price surge.

  • Deep Company Analysis: Empowering users to perform in-depth analysis of individual companies’ financial health and ownership profile, thus boosting ticker analysis;

Example: A deep dive into a company's ownership profile might reveal a significant stake held by a known activist investor. This could indicate potential corporate changes or a catalyst for increased stock price volatility.

  • Cross-Company Analysis: Facilitating comparisons across companies to identify sectoral trends and investment opportunities;

Example: Imagine analyzing two competitors in the renewable energy sector; one might have a higher insider ownership percentage, indicating strong internal belief in the company’s future, while the other could show more diverse institutional support. This analysis could help you decide which stock aligns better with your investment strategy.

  • Stock Screening: Utilize ticker-mapped ownership data to filter and identify stocks that meet specific investment criteria, such as institutional ownership levels or insider activity;

Example: A hedge fund manager could use the institutional holdings data feed to screen for stocks with high insider buying activity, as this often indicates confidence in the company's future prospects.

  • Backtesting Investment Strategies: Point-in-time data is key for backtesting, enabling users to refine and validate their trading models accurately;

Example: A quantitative analyst could use historical ownership data to backtest a trading strategy that aims to profit from the price difference between a stock's intrinsic value and its current market price, based on changes in institutional ownership.

  • Forecasting Performance: The comprehensive dataset allows customers to forecast a security’s performance, leveraging historical and up-to-date financial data.

Example: A portfolio manager could use the data feed to forecast the performance of a stock by analyzing historical trends in institutional ownership, earnings growth, and other financial metrics.

Combining Traditional Ownership Data with Alternative Data

TenderAlpha’s Institutional Ownership & Company Fundamentals Data, used alongside our various global government contracts, trade flows, and transactional supply chain datasets, offers a unique combination of traditional financial data and alternative data. Such data synergy creates a powerful opportunity for users to perform deep single- and cross-company analysis.

Coupling Institutional Ownership & Company Fundamentals Data With… Government Contract Awards Data

For example, analyzing a company's financial performance alongside its history of winning government contracts allows for an even more nuanced understanding of a company's financial picture.

Continuous success in public procurement can signal recurring revenue streams, potentially leading to more stable cash flow and future profitability reflected in the company fundamentals data. Conversely, a decline in government contracts might be a sign of a slowdown in a particular segment of the company's business.

TenderAlpha’s ticker-mapped global government contracting data solutions include prime government contract awards, US federal subcontract awards, and a forward-looking receivables dataset. These products enable an in-depth analysis of stocks’ performance in the public procurement market, the cash they generate from doing business with the government, as well as inform on their main subcontractors, thus shedding light on the stability of their supply chain.

Coupling Institutional Ownership & Company Fundamentals Data With… Supply Chain Data

In a similar vein, users can uncover hidden correlations between a company's financial health and its supply chain efficiency gleaned from alternative data and reveal hidden risks and/or opportunities.

Additionally, this integration enhances stock screening processes by allowing investors to filter stocks based on ownership data alongside alternative indicators, providing a more comprehensive view of potential investments.

To illustrate, consider a global electronics manufacturer that is experiencing significant supply chain disruptions. While the company's financial fundamentals might be negatively impacted, its institutional ownership could also be affected.

If investors perceive the company's response to the disruptions as inadequate or if they anticipate long-term supply chain challenges, they might reduce their holdings, leading to a decline in the stock price.

TenderAlpha harnesses its unique capabilities in extracting and aggregating government contracts data to build powerful transactional supply chain datasets on both G2B and B2B level to paint a comprehensive picture of the economic activity of governments and their top contractors and subcontractors.

Coupling Institutional Ownership & Company Fundamentals Data With… Trade Flows Data

In the meantime, by overlaying trade flows data with institutional ownership data, investors can gain insights into a company's global footprint and potential exposure to geopolitical risks.

For instance, a company with a large portion of its ownership concentrated in a specific country, while also maintaining significant import-export activity with a country experiencing political or economic instability, might present a heightened risk.

The import-export data by TenderAlpha is a result of a comprehensive combination of direct customs and mirror data, offering intelligence on global supply chain networks, international partnerships, trade routes, and market trends.

With over 300 data points and covering 28,000+ tickers, the TenderAlpha Institutional Ownership & Company Fundamentals Data allows you to perform deep dives, compare companies, and forecast performance with greater precision, empowering your investment decisions.
